Claire Mackay recently became the ABC’s head of News for South Australia. Previously Claire held the same position in the Northern Territory with a smaller team. Claire is enjoying South Australia and the new role. She especially values working with people to help them create great news stories that inform the audience. The mentoring opportunities that leadership positions can bring is also another passion.
Until arriving in Adelaide in August Claire lived in Darwin for 16 years, which has been her longest time in one place so far – although this included one year in India in 2008 with her family, part of which she reported for ABC radio news on events in the region.
In the end it was the relaxed people and out doors Darwin lifestyle combined with some of the country’s most interesting news stories that kept Claire in Darwin where she had many roles – reporting producing and presenting the news over the years.
Since the early days of getting her degree in Communications and Media Studies in the 90’s, Claire has worked in a number of towns and cities around Australia as a journalist. She says ‘the ABC has been a wonderful employer with a range of great career opportunities that have made for an enjoyable and rewarding journey”. Good news.
